How to get better at basketball at home (no gym needed)

A 30-minute at-home routine for handles, footwork and shooting form, plus how to track it so you actually see progress.

You don't need a gym membership or a private trainer to get better. Most of the skills that separate good players from great ones (handles, footwork, balance and form) can be trained in a driveway, a garage or a basement. The catch is that solo practice gets boring fast, and it's hard to know if it's working. Here's a simple routine and how to make it stick.

What you need

The 30-minute home routine

1. Warm-up handles (5 minutes)

Stationary pounds with each hand, 30 seconds each, low and hard. Then figure eights through the legs. Keep your eyes up the whole time. The goal is control, not speed.

2. Combo dribbling (10 minutes)

Work in rounds of 45 seconds on, 15 seconds off:

Count your clean reps each round and try to beat the number next round. Counting turns a boring drill into a game.

3. Footwork (5 minutes)

Jab steps, reverse pivots and drop steps without the ball, then with it. Stay low and stay balanced. Footwork is the most underrated skill for young players.

4. Form shooting (10 minutes)

If you have a hoop, start one step from the rim, one hand only, and work back. If you don't, shoot straight up into the air in your driveway and focus on a clean release and backspin. Ten perfect reps beat fifty sloppy ones.

The real secret: track it

The players who improve at home are the ones who can see their progress. Write your rep counts down, or use an app that counts for you. Ball AI uses your phone's camera to count every dribble and shot, scores your form, and keeps a streak going so you show up again tomorrow.

How often should you train?

Four or five short sessions a week beat one long one. Consistency is what builds handles. Keep the streak alive, even on days you only have 15 minutes.
